  BACKGROUND    erina moreno's life journey is marked by a series of challenging yet transformative experiences across mexico and japan. born to a mexican father and japanese mother in mexico city, erina grew up bilingual, fluent in both spanish and japanese. her early years were shaped significantly by her mother karin's unconventional methods of education, preparing erina to become a prodigy in surgery through an underground hospital setting. despite the illicit nature of these teachings, erina embraced them eagerly.
at the age of 14, erina's family relocated to hachioji, japan, after the passing of her paternal grandfather, leaving behind their mexican roots for her mother's homeland. this move not only changed erina's cultural environment but also exposed her to racial discrimination and bullying in her japanese junior high school due to her mixed heritage. these challenges fostered a bold and resilient personality in erina, who often clashed with peers and stood up against bullies alongside her best friend, ren kuruno.
erina's defiance against her mother's aspirations for her to follow in her surgical footsteps led her to pursue a bachelor's degree in accounting, a decision that symbolized her rebellion against familial expectations. throughout her twenties, erina navigated through various jobs, including a stint as a celebrated performer at a nightclub owned by a family friend in kamurocho, where she earned the moniker "la reina de rio grande."
